Border Collie

Border Collies are incredibly intelligent dogs, with an ancestry in talented sheep herding abilities that make it understandable how keen of senses they have, along with the high energy that comes along with it. These dogs are known for an intelligence that can even outwit their owners, and for their ability to persevere through hard work, which leaves them desiring tasks to complete, and physical stamina that seems to never end. They are very alert and learn extremely quickly. It is critical to keep a Border Collie entertained and mentally stimulated, as they do best with lots of attention and a way to focus their energy. These dogs do not do well in environments where they aren’t both physically and mentally challenged; they require more than just a walk and playing fetch. Border Collies thrive when they are taught challenging new tasks, and don’t like to become bored. Owners of these dogs will even claim that Border Collies are able to know what their owner wants before even being given a task; they have an ability to notice facial features and almost figure out what they will be asked to do. When herding, Border Collies utilize eye contact to round up animals, and they may do this in a household as well. While they are extremely friendly and good around strangers, it is important to monitor them around children, as they may try to round up the kids, or any other moving things. When in a proper home that can give them the attention and training they desire, Border Collies are extremely lovable pets.

Border Collies are typically between 18 and 22 inches tall, and weigh around 30-45 pounds. While they are able to adapt well to different environments, they should have plenty of room to exercise, and shouldn’t be allowed unattended near roads, as they may try to herd vehicles. Dog sports can be a great way to keep a Border Collie’s body and mind active, even if they don’t have sheep to herd. Their coats are typically black and white, and can either be a rough or smooth variety. To protect them while they work hard, their coats are weather resistant, and don’t require a lot of grooming. If an owner is excited for an intelligent dog that loves lots of challenges and exercise, consider a Border Collie as your next pup!
