Beagles are extremely lovable dogs that are known to be friendly to everyone they meet. They were originally bred as scenthounds, and are still used for hunting and tracking in many places. As hounds, they can be stubborn and may need training in unique and creative ways, but they will easily capture hearts with their fun-loving personality, adorable eyes, and floppy ears. Beagles are high energy dogs and require stimulation to keep them entertained. If their attention isn’t directed elsewhere, they may be found digging, howling, or trying to escape. While not great as guard dogs because of it, beagles are extremely friendly, great with kids, and know no stranger. They have exciting personalities, and express that through their howls and barking. Beagles are extremely loving and affectionate, although can be stubborn and should be trained well from a young age. These outgoing puppies are happiest when getting lots of attention. Typically they will do best with a family that can exercise them; they can even adapt to apartment living if they are still taken on walks and played with!
Due to their desire to sniff and high prey drive, Beagles should be in a well contained, fenced-in backyard, and monitored or kept on a leash. They love to explore and can wander off if not watched. Young beagles require a high amount of exercise and shouldn’t be left on their own for long periods of time. As beagles age, they can become prone to laziness and weight gain from lack of exercise and overeating. Be sure to know how much food your particular dog should be eating, and not let them be the ones that decide this, as they will have a tendency to eat more than they need.
The most common colors for beagles are brown, black, and white, but they can vary in color and size. Beagles are small dogs, with a typical height of 13-15 inches tall, and weighing 18-30 pounds. While they do shed, they have short hair that isn’t usually very noticeable. They should be brushed at least once a week to encourage new hair growth by removing older, dead hair. Make sure to care for your pup by cleaning their ears, trimming their nails, and taking other health precautions. While this breed can take a lot of work to train, they are extremely loving and could be a great addition to your home!
